PARKING FOR VISITORS AT MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT, UNC-CH

A map showing parking on campus and in downtown Chapel Hill is available here. You may also link to the University-wide parking information page.

As with any historic campus, parking was not part of the original design. As a result, parking is limited. Please note that nearly all UNC parking lots are free-of-charge after 5pm on weekdays, and all day on Saturday and Sunday. EXCEPTION: On weekend days which involve men's basketball or football games, as you might expect, parking is NOT free and all lots near the mathematics building will likely be filled to capacity well in advance of the event.

Directly to the east side of Phillips Hall (in which the mathematics department resides) is the HANES VISITOR PARKING LOT, or directly across the street from Phillips the HANES ART CENTER/SMITH PARKING LOT. Simply continue down Cameron Street past Phillips Hall to enter one of the lots, (clearly marked) one on each side. This is by far the most convenient parking location to the mathematics department. The fee is approximately $1 / hr.

In the (likely) event that these lots are filled, you may on weekends park anyplace else on campus (see above), and there are several faculty/staff lots adjacent to the HANES lot on CAMERON street. On weekdays before 5pm, you will need to go to a commercial lot in the city of Chapel Hill.

Commercial Lots:
Retrace your steps down CAMERON STREET back to COLUMBIA STREET and make a RIGHT onto Columbia, continue along Columbia for two blocks, passing Franklin Street, and making a RIGHT TURN onto Rosemary. On your right are several city-run flat lots, some with meters, and one gated with an attendant. Directly beyond the city-run lots is a large parking ramp complex on your left hand side. They are all equally (in)convenient and roughly the same cost, $1 per hour.

WARNING: You may be tempted to avoid paying a fee by parking in the University Square parking lot, the Granville Towers Parking Lot, or other parking lot for customers of a business or tenants of a complex. *DO NOT* do so. You will be instantaneously towed with probability 1. Businesses are vigilant for people (esp. students) who are not customers parking in their premium parking spots. In fact, most of the businesses very near campus have "security" guards whose only job is to spot students and campus visitors illegally parking, and to have their vehicles summarily towed.
